How to Start Poultry Farming in Kenya

The complete 2026 guide โ€” breeds, housing, feeding, incubators, disease management and finding buyers. What separates profitable farmers from those who struggle in the first three months.

Poultry farming is one of the most accessible and profitable agribusiness opportunities in Kenya. The demand for chicken meat and eggs grows every year โ€” driven by population growth, urbanisation, and changing diets. But while many people enter expecting quick profits, a significant number fail within the first few months due to poor planning and limited knowledge. Understanding the fundamentals before you start is what separates successful farmers from those who struggle.

Step 1 โ€” Define Your Objective

Before you buy a single chick, decide what you are farming for. The three main paths in Kenya are:

Egg production (layers) โ€” takes longer to mature but provides consistent income month after month. Kari Improved Kienyeji lays up to 280 eggs per year.
Meat production โ€” faster returns through live bird and carcass sales. Sasso and Kuroiler reach market weight in 10โ€“16 weeks.
Dual-purpose โ€” breeds like Kuroiler and Rainbow Rooster give both eggs and meat. Ideal for smallholders who want income from both streams.

If you are a first-time farmer: Start with a dual-purpose breed like Kuroiler. It forgives beginner mistakes, thrives on local feed and forage, and gives you income from both eggs and meat while you learn.

Step 2 โ€” Location and Housing

Your poultry house should have access to clean water, reliable transport to market, and good ventilation. Overcrowding is one of the most common and costly mistakes โ€” it leads to poor growth, high mortality, and disease outbreaks.

Minimum space: 0.1 mยฒ per bird in intensive systems (10 birds per square metre)
Ventilate well โ€” ammonia buildup from droppings causes respiratory disease
Predator-proof โ€” most losses happen at night
Position with prevailing wind blowing across, not into, the house

Step 3 โ€” Incubator or Natural Hatching?

Traditional hatching using broody hens is unreliable and limits your scale. One broody hen covers 12โ€“15 eggs and takes 21 days. A 128-egg incubator covers 128 eggs with 85%+ hatch rate โ€” and you can run multiple batches per month.

In Kenya, AC/DC incubators are essential. Kenya Power outages are common and a 3-hour cut during lockdown (days 19โ€“21) can destroy an entire batch in a standard electric incubator. AC/DC models switch automatically to solar or battery power with no loss in temperature or humidity.

Step 4 โ€” Feeding

Feed accounts for 60โ€“70% of your total cost. Getting this right โ€” both the type of feed and the cost โ€” is the biggest lever on your profitability.

StageFeed TypeProteinAmount/Bird/Day
Weeks 1โ€“4Chick mash20%15โ€“25g
Weeks 5โ€“8Growers mash16โ€“18%40โ€“60g
Week 8 to slaughterFinisher mash14โ€“16%80โ€“120g
Laying hensLayers mash16% + calcium120โ€“130g

To cut costs by 30โ€“50%, home-mix your growers ration: 60% dry maize + 25% sunflower cake + 10% omena (fish meal) + 5% mineral premix. Use a feed shredder to process the dry maize on-farm.

Step 5 โ€” Disease Management

A single Newcastle outbreak can kill your entire flock in 72 hours. Vaccination is the cheapest insurance in poultry farming.

Day 7: Newcastle (ND-Lasota) by eye drop
Day 14: Gumboro (IBD) in drinking water
Day 21: Gumboro booster in drinking water
Day 28 onwards: Newcastle every 4โ€“6 weeks
Always buy cold-chain vaccines from a certified vet supplier

Step 6 โ€” Finding Buyers Before You Start

Marketing is as important as production. Before you hatch your first batch, identify where you will sell. Options in Kenya:

Local market days โ€” direct to consumers, best margins
Restaurants and hotels โ€” especially for Sasso (premium meat)
Neighbours and community โ€” start your customer list before you hatch
WhatsApp and TikTok โ€” many Kenyan farmers now sell directly through social media
